Police arrested a 37-year-old Eugene man on Wednesday, Sept. 10, a day after authorities shared images of a suspect wanted in connection with bank robberies in Creswell and Cottage Grove.

Police took Clarke Chaos Zyz into custody around noon after spotting him in the gold, two-door Ford Escort identified by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office as the vehicle used by the robbery suspect, according to a sheriff’s office statement.

Sheriff’s office detectives earlier on Wednesday had identified Zyz as a suspect, with Eugene police surveilling a home in the area of Green Acres Road believed to possibly be Zyz’s place of residence.

Police arrested Zyz without incident, and he has been booked into Lane County Jail on suspicion of two counts of second-degree robbery, two counts of menacing and two counts of second-degree disorderly conduct.

The sheriff’s office and Cottage Grove police investigated robberies at two Banner banks on the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 9, with the robberies happening only about 30 minutes apart.

In both robberies, the suspect handed a teller a note and demanded money.

Lane County court records show Zyz successfully petitioned in May of last year for a name change from Clarke Reese McMakin.
