QuickTake:
Kasumi House opened in early January and offers Japanese comfort food for a variety of culinary moods, from ramen and teriyaki bento boxes to a tuna sushi roll served on fire. They also have an extensive bubble tea menu.
I love sushi, particularly nigiri — slices of fresh seafood pressed into a mound of seasoned rice with a sinus-clearing dab of wasabi.
Kasumi House does serve nigiri, as well as sashimi, and maki, and regular and signature rolls. But the Japanese comfort food eatery, which opened in Eugene earlier this year, is also cranking out sushi tacos.
They come two to an order ($17.95) and are filled with rice, kani (imitation crab) salad, and your choice of soft shell crab, salmon, raw tuna or shrimp. The tempura-fried seaweed shell is surprisingly sturdy, promising a loud and satisfying crackle with every bite. Dare I say I enjoyed this sharp departure from nigiri more than I thought I would.

The menu descriptions for some items are scarce, so ask your server if you don’t know what something is or just want more information.
I did just that when I saw the avocado bomb ($8.95), another fried treat and a meal in itself: A whole avocado is stuffed with crab salad and a pocket of either salmon or spicy tuna, then deep fried, quartered and topped with a healthy drizzle of spicy mayo and salty-sweet unagi sauce.
I also tried the agedashi tofu, with a custard-like interior and light crisp fry (noticing a theme here?), laid over a savory broth with a confetti of bonito flakes.
To wash down all the tempura, my server recommended the brown-sugar bubble tea with bouncy, house-made tapioca pearls. Shake the tea well to distribute the thick, molasses-y caramel.
Kasumi House also offers bento boxes, ramen and light bites. Vegetarian options are available in just about every category — look for the green icon.
