QuickTake:

It’s early June, and Eugene is already breaking heat records with a high of 94 degrees on Sunday. A heat advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. Monday.

The heat wave that hit Eugene and Springfield over the weekend broke records, according to the National Weather Service.

On Sunday, the agency reported a daily high of 94 degrees in Eugene, surpassing the previous record of 93 degrees set in 1955.

A heat advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. Monday. Tuesday’s high is forecast at 87, but temperatures are expected to return to the 70s through the weekend, with sunny skies and calm winds.

Climate assessments from Oregon State University show that Oregon is becoming warmer and more prone to drought due to climate change. Researchers say these trends contribute to increasingly frequent record-breaking heat.
