State transportation authorities re-opened Highway 126 northeast of Springfield at about 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 17, after closing down the highway for most of the day.
The Oregon Department of Transportation shut down the highway overnight about 26 miles northeast of Springfield “due to downed trees and power lines blocking the roadway,” Mindy McCartt, an ODOT spokesperson said in an email early Wednesday morning.
High winds and heavy rain contributed to the hazardous conditions, McCartt said.
All lanes for approximately 18 miles east of mile marker 26.5 were closed, according to a Department of Transportation announcement made just after 6 a.m. The announcement updated a previous closure notice issued overnight.
McCartt said just after 7 a.m. crews were clearing trees and coordinating with local utilities to address the downed power lines, McCartt said.
The stretch of closed highway extended east until about 1 mile east of Vida, mile marker 44.
Just north of Lane County, a 40-mile stretch of U.S. 20 was also closed, from about 5 miles east of Sweet Home to the highway junction with Highway 126. It also re-opened by Wednesday afternoon.
Local utilities reported weather-based outages overnight. As of about 6:20 a.m., Eugene Water & Electric Board reported 331 customers without power in areas scattered across the city.
The Springfield Utility Board overnight reported a weather-related outage in the West Centennial area, but on its website said that by 6 a.m., power had been restored to all customers.
Wind gusts up to 45 mph were recorded at the Eugene airport overnight, according to National Weather Service data.
