Lookout Eugene-Springfield columnist Bob Welch’s reflection on reconciling his Christian faith with broader evangelical support for Donald Trump touched a nerve with many readers. We’re publishing a compilation of responses and letters to the editor we’ve received about it over the past week.

Thank you Bob for putting my feelings into words and saying it so eloquently. I worry for our nation when those who proclaim to be Christians root for the killing and cruelty of others not “like us.”

The Bob Welch column is pretty good. Nice to hear a Christian taking on the evangelicals.

Thank you to Bob Welch.

I loved Bob Welch’s column. It reminded me of Tim Alberta’s “The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory,” which I learned of when he came to the University of Oregon Wayne Morse Center to give a talk a couple of years ago. Please pass on that title to Bob Welch (though he probably knows about it already). Keep up the good work!

Bob Welch’s column on the state of Christianity in the United States today was spot on. It should be forwarded to Christianity Today, The Christian Science Monitor and other conservative Christian periodicals. Christians across the nation need to hear this.

I immediately forwarded it to several of my Christian friends here in Eugene, and received enthusiastic, positive responses. I immediately forwarded it to several of my longtime Christian friends in Texas and Tennessee and heard nothing. LOL.

Many of us are doing all we can to resist Trump’s authoritarian takeover, but few have Bob Welch’s courage and ability to do it so effectively. Thank you, Bob.

As a former fundamentalist in Oklahoma, thanks for sharing your journey. I know many former evangelicals, like myself, who have moved on from Christianism. You stayed. God bless and continue to keep you.
