QuickTake:

The local store, Flowers by Taby, will join other shops across the nation in the day’s festivities. People are given two flowers, one to keep and one to give away.

Flower shop Flowers by Taby will be joining the national Petal It Forward day on Wednesday, Oct. 15, to give unexpected passersby and store visitors two free flowers or bouquets — one to keep and one to give to someone else.

The program was founded after a survey by the Society of American Florists found that while 80 percent of people said receiving flowers makes them happy, 88 percent said that giving flowers makes them happy.

Taby Phifer, owner of Flowers by Taby, said the program gives people a chance to experience both. She started participating in Petal It Forward day three years ago.

“It’s a powerful way to illustrate the positive health benefits of giving and receiving flowers,” Phifer said.

She started her flower business six years ago as a passion project, making bouquets out of her garage part-time. Phifer recently moved her business to a new location at 1307 Lincoln St. in Eugene.

“It’s just such an awesome concept, right?” she said of Petal It Forward. “I mean, there’s so much negativity in our area. It’s like, goodness, we need to have some positivity, not all negativity.”

Phifer is accepting donations to support the initiative. Donations will only be used to buy flowers and to give people the opportunity to Petal It Forward.
