QuickTake:
Left a good job in the city? Working for the man every night and day? Well, take a load off with some of these cultural events to add to your calendar for the week ahead.
Happy February, Lookout readers! We’re not quite at Valentine’s season (stay tuned for our recommendations for you and your sweetheart), but I’m hoping you’ll still fall in love with my recommended arts and culture events leading up to the day.
We have a lot of visual art for you this week, two concerts, a jukebox musical and a special screening you’ll want to snag tickets for before it sells out.
Let’s get into it:
Art

First Friday ArtWalk
It’s the first week of a new month, so you know what that means: piles of art for you to peruse to kick off your weekend at Lane Arts Council’s First Friday Art Walk.
This month’s festivities include celebrations for the Lunar New Year, with performances from Phi Long Lion Dance, Best Martial Arts Institute, Eugene Taiko and more, in addition to exhibitions at ArtWalk venues around Eugene.
- When: Friday, Feb. 6, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
- Where: Downtown Eugene (a map of participating venues is available in the First Friday ArtWalk Guide)
- How much: Free to attend
Warehouse District Art Hop
If your Friday walk isn’t enough art, maybe add a hop to your schedule the next day? The monthly Warehouse District Art Hop returns for another tour of the industrial-turned-art spaces on Eugene’s west side. The highlight this month is the show “Dead Rockstars” at Blunt Graffix, a group exhibit with work from more than 40 artists from around the country honoring big-name musicians who have died. (This is a return for the “Dead Rockstars,” which first happened in Eugene in 2012.)
- When: Saturday, Feb. 7. Different participating businesses have different hours, so check with the online Art Hop event listing to see specific times.
- Where: The hop covers, roughly, the west Eugene stretch between Beltline and Chambers, from Roosevelt Boulevard to West 11th Avenue. A map of the participating locations is available on the Art Hop website.
- How much: Free to attend
Bob Keefer photography on display
If you would like to see even more art, longtime Eugene Weekly arts writer Bob Keefer’s exhibit of Eastern Oregon desert photography opened this week. The exhibit features desert landscapes, flora and fauna photographed by Keefer, printed onto canvas or watercolor paper, and then hand-colored in dusty hues.
- When: The exhibit is on display now, but a reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. Keefer will be giving a gallery talk that day at 5 p.m.
- Where: The Maple Room at Inn at the 5th, 205 E. Sixth Ave., next door to the 5th Street Public Market
- How much: Free to attend
Concerts
Marisa Frantz: ‘On the Radio’
Eugene singer and songwriter Marisa Frantz and company will be playing a night of music from 1967’s Billboard Hot 100 list, including favorites from The Beatles, The Mamas & The Papas, The Supremes, Frankie Valli and much, much more. I have a soft spot for 1960s pop music, but I have to admit I’ve never heard of 1967’s top track: “To Sir, With Love” by Lulu, from the 1967 James Clavell-directed Sidney Poitier-starring movie of the same name. The more you know!
- When: There will be two performances in Eugene: Friday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m. (Another performance in Corvallis follows on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m.)
- Where: Jaqua Concert Hall at the Shedd Institute, 285 E. Broadway, Eugene
- How much: Tickets for the Eugene concerts start at $11.75
Daniel Donato at WOW Hall
Yeehaw, but thoughtful. After stops in Portland and Seattle, Daniel Donato is bringing his “cosmic country” — billed as a mix of the Nashville sound with 1960s California — to Eugene this weekend, if you’d like a different kind of hoedown this week.
- When: Saturday, Feb. 7; doors open at 7 p.m.
- Where: WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave., Eugene
- How much: Tickets are $25 in advance, $35 on the day of the show.
‘Tina — The Tina Turner Musical’
OK, not quite a concert, but I think a rip-roaring jukebox musical is close enough to fit into the category. This musical, which first premiered in 2018, tells Tina Turner’s life story through songs like “Nutbush City Limits,” “Proud Mary,” “River Deep Mountain High” and more. I think it is physically impossible to have a bad time listening to “Proud Mary,” making this a night of music to pop on your calendar.
- When: The musical opens tonight, Thursday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m, and runs through Sunday, Feb. 8.
- Where: The Silva Concert Hall of the Hult Center, in downtown Eugene.
- How much: Available ticket prices vary by show but start at $34 for a ticket to tonight’s performance. Other performances have available tickets starting at $44 and $49.
What’s playing at the movies?
New at the box office
Charli XCX’s brat summer has come and gone, and it makes me feel old just to acknowledge it. But are you down for a meta mockumentary about that very moment? Then you’ll be happy to know that “The Moment” is screening in Eugene starting this week, if you’d like to watch a blasé Charli XCX stumble through becoming a phenomenon. (I hear Kylie Jenner has a standout scene playing herself, and legitimate comedy chops to boot.)
Playing at Metro Cinemas and Cinemark Eugene-Springfield 17.
Would you like yet another “Dracula”? I’m still not quite sure what to make of this Luc Besson-directed take on the classic vampire tale, starring Caleb Landry Jones as our central vamp. It’s billed as a “unique” reimagining of the Bram Stoker story as a gothic romance. (I thought that’s what “Nosferatu” in 2024 was doing, but OK!) Doubts aside, casting Christoph Waltz as your vampire-hunting priest is a solid move.
Playing at Regal Valley River Center and Cinemark Eugene-Springfield 17.
Special screenings
Minor Mirage performing an original score for ‘The Wind’
It’s not every day that you can settle in to watch a 1928 silent film about a young woman who moves to the dust bowl of Texas and is haunted by a constant wind as she loses her mind — especially not accompanied by a genre-blurring band.
When this performance first happened in November, it sold out too soon for me to include in this list. Now, local multi-instrumentalists Minor Mirage are returning for three more performances, on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s show is already sold out, so you’ll need to act fast if you’re interested.
Tickets are available for two shows on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.
‘Up in Smoke’
If you’re interested in protagonists who are losing their minds in a totally different way, the latest piece of stoner cinema presented by the Art House’s “Green Screen” series is “Up in Smoke,” the 1978 slacker buddy comedy and film debut of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong.
Showtimes start Friday, Feb. 6, and run through Wednesday, Feb. 11.
That’s everything I have for you this week, Lookout readers. I’m pleasantly surprised by our amount of sunny days, but totally baffled by what level of jacket makes sense as I head out the door every day.
