Deputy Editor
Sarah Lorge Butler has worked for Runner’s World since 2012 as a reporter, features writer, and editor.
She has covered two Olympics (Rio in 2016 and Paris in 2024) and has broken numerous stories in elite running. She has written about executive pay bloat at the sport’s national governing body; a lawsuit filed by an athlete who collapsed at the Olympic Trials at Hayward Field during the extreme heat of 2021; and how shoe companies use restrictive clauses in college athletes’ name-image-likeness deals to lock them up after their college careers end. She has also enjoyed writing about middle-of-the-pack runners accomplishing extraordinary feats.
Before Runner’s World, Sarah worked at Sports Illustrated and SmartMoney, and she penned a humorous weekly column on family finances—her story on Tooth Fairy payouts drew a large audience—for CBS’s MoneyWatch. Her freelance work has appeared in The New York Times and Oregon Quarterly, and she is the author of two popular fitness books.
Sarah is also a community walk leader and beginner run coach for Run Hub Northwest and a volunteer with the Interfaith Food Hub and Friends of South Eugene High School. She and her husband, Charlie, a journalism professor at the University of Oregon, have lived in the Friendly neighborhood of Eugene since 2016. They are the parents of two young adults in college, and they have a cranky rescue dog, Buddy, who arrived during the pandemic and rules the household with an iron paw.
As Lookout launches, Sarah looks forward to helping shape coverage of the Eugene-Springfield area, especially in business and sports. She is eager to hear from area residents about the issues that are important to them.
