The 1,531-foot Mount Pisgah southeast of downtown Eugene resides in the 2,363-acre Howard Buford Recreation Area, the largest Lane County Parks site. The Coast and Middle forks of the Willamette River flow around the mountain’s base and the park protects one of the largest contiguous native oak savannah prairies still remaining in the region. From the summit, hikers can enjoy 360-degree views, making it perfect for a sunset or sunrise adventure.

The naturescape is also home to an arboretum located on the mountain’s west slope. Operated by the nonprofit Friends of Mt. Pisgah Arboretum, the site includes a variety of plants, seven miles of trails, a pavilion, and a visitor center.

Suggested Route for Newcomers:

  • Hike the 1.4-mile Beistel’s West Summit Trail out and back to the top of the mountain for a roundtrip of 2.8 miles with 1,050 feet in elevation gain.
  • Park at the West Trailhead lot near the arboretum. The beginning of the trail will be clear from the parking lot, with an information kiosk at the start.
  • The first half of the trail is very steep with little shade and follows a gravel road that can be a little slippery on the hike down. The second half of the hike continues to climb but becomes gentler. There are a few benches along the way to rest with a great view.
  • Near the summit marker, look for the guestbook to add your name and message.

Suggested Route to Keep Exploring:

  • While the Beistel’s West Summit Trail is the most popular hike at Mount Pisgah, the recreation area includes 17 miles of hiking paths through diverse natural areas.
  • Grab a park trail map and make it a goal to hike them all, from treks through mixed riparian hardwood forests to open meadows that burst with spring wildflowers.
