Prep sports preview: Highlanders, Axe revive crosstown football rivalry

A crosstown Eugene football rivalry highlights the weekend's agenda of prep sports games, matches and meets.

It’s another busy weekend for Lane County high school sports, and the latest edition of a long-running football rivalry gets our nod for the game of the week.

Game of the week

North Eugene visits South Eugene Friday in the league opener for both teams. The Highlanders bring a 1-1 record into the game, and are looking to rebound from a disappointing 48-21 loss last week against Corvallis in which the team committed five turnovers in the first half. The Axe (0-1) suffered a brutal opening road game last week against No. 7 Milwaukie-Milwaukie Academy of the Arts, losing 42-0. Each team in the league — Special District 4 — already has at least one loss on its ledger. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

1A eight-player game of the week

The Mohawk Mustangs (1-0), No. 4 in the Oregon School Activities Association rankings, host No. 7 Riddle in an early-season nonleague clash. The Mustangs beat Pilot Rock-Ukiah 22-16 last week in a game played in Dufur. Riddle had an easier time last week, posting a 40-24 win over Yoncalla. Friday’s game isn’t the first time that Mohawk and Riddle have faced each other on the field this season; the two met during a jamboree Aug. 28. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Friday.
