Grass fires in Veneta and in the Camp Creek Road area of Springfield are being investigated separately as arson, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, with deputies making two arrests Friday, Aug. 1.
Fire personnel called to a home on 88100 block of Fifth Street in Veneta at about 2 p.m. Friday reported that gasoline had been poured inside the house. A fire began on an outside pile of debris and spread to a backyard.
A witness saw a woman run from the scene, and deputies soon found and detained a suspect at a business in the area, according to the sheriff’s office. Shara Maria Brittain, 29, of Veneta, was arrested and booked into the Lane County Jail on suspicion of first-degree arson.
In a separate incident, a witness reported seeing a woman lighting a grass fire on the 39100 block of Camp Creek Road in Springfield, the sheriff’s office said.
A witness confronted the woman and extinguished the fire, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies detained a suspect, Samantha Dawn Weekly, 34, of Eugene, who was booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree arson.
