Lucas Hellberg is primarily covering the upcoming May 2026 primary election as Lookout Eugene-Springfield’s first Dean Rea Intern. He also occasionally reports on breaking news and other topics.

He is a journalism and economics student at the University of Oregon. A Pacific Northwest native, Lucas grew up in Washington state’s Puget Sound region and Portland, where he contributed reporting to The Oregonian and served as editor-in-chief of his high school’s newspaper.

Lucas was a general assignment reporting intern at the East Oregonian in Pendleton last summer. He has also covered business and government for The Daily Emerald. At The Emerald, his reporting has uncovered significant county-level racial and ethnic disparities in Oregon’s juvenile justice system.
